Jason Orme Talks About True Events and 13 Dreams

Jason Orme; Photo from MySpace

Jason Orme is nothing short of amazing. I was lucky enough to interview him about his life, playing alongside Alanis Morissette and playing with his current band Big Red Button. Recently added to the soundtrack of The FX's new show, "Dirt", starring Courteney Cox - Big Red Button's sophomore album is already making waves in the music world. With smooth melodies and strong lyrics BRB will not disappoint! Read on to find out how the band met and what life is like on the road!

You have quite the resume under your belt! How did you get started playing guitar? How old were you?

I was 14 when I started. When I was 12 I had a friend in school who was taking up the bass and he said “if you play guitar, we could start a band”. For the next 2 years I begged my Mom for a guitar and she finally relented. From there I just never stopped and it was all I wanted to do. I even stopped skateboarding (which was the only other thing I cared about at the time) because I didn’t want to break my arm…again! My older brother really got me into a lot of music too, Hendrix, Beatles, Zeppelin, Bowie, etc.

Was it difficult to get a start in the music business?

I suppose it’s pretty hard but it depends on how you look at it and what you want to do. I had a job in my hometown at a guitar shop so I got to know a lot of people that way and I played in a lot of bands. A lot of people I knew that were incredibly talented just never kept it up…maybe decided to take a “normal” job, etc. I just always knew this was what I wanted to do so stopping wasn’t an option.

Jason (right) with on stage with Alanis Morrisette; You recorded on 2 albums with Alanis Morissette – So Called Chaos and Jagged Little Pill Acoustic. Was there anything unique about playing music with Alanis? How did you get on board?

Playing with Alanis is an amazing experience. I guess one of the unique things about her is just how fast she is. She’s such a gifted singer that she can come into the studio and do her thing very quickly, usually one take, so you have to be ready. She’s also very encouraging and nurturing so you tend to feel really comfortable while you’re recording with her. I got into her band by auditioning. A good friend of mine was in her band for a few years and recommendedJason (center) with Blair Sinta (left) and David Levita (right) after a show with Alanis me to come in when she was looking for new members. I was very fortunate because I think a lot of talented people came through. I think she really wanted a certain vibe with all of the players and I was lucky enough to fit in.

I’ve always wondered how life is on tour…is it as glamorous as it seems?

Hmmm….well, it’s pretty hard to complain! Seeing the world in that fashion is really exciting. Being on the bus and smelling everyone’s bodily functions…maybe not so glamorous, but you know, it’s all fun! We all get along great too so that helps.

Your current band, Big Red Button, is starting to be known around the country. How did you all meet?

Christine (the singer) and I met a few years ago through a mutual friend who thought we’d be good writing partners, which turned out to be very true. We kept writing and finally decided to make our first cd, Based On True Events, and put a band together. I knew Dieter, our drummer, already and brought him in and I met Greg (bass) on the Alanis tour while he was working as a tech for our keyboard player.

How would you describe the sound BRB has?

I guess the word ‘eclectic’ always comes to mind because we kind of cover a lot of ground. We’re a little rock, a little acoustic, etc…I think that Christine has a very unique voice so we’re lucky in that way since the vocals tend to really put the imprint of a band in people’s minds.

Do you feel like anything has changed between recording your first album, Based on True Events and your new release 13 Dreams? Do you feel like the music has evolved in any way
?

Oh definitely. We grew a lot as writers and also bringing in Zac Rae to produce was a huge part of shaping the sound of the band and helping us evolve. The first record had a little more of the "Americana" or "alt country sound, which we like, but on 13 Dreams we had some other things we wanted to explore musically and soundwise. We’re really excited about getting the new CD out into the world. And we found out that they're going to use 2 of the songs in a new TV show on the FX Channel called “Dirt” with Courteney Cox. I think it starts on Jan. 3rd and we’re in the pilot. It’s a song called ‘Heaven & Earth’ so listen for it! And a few episodes later they’ll also be using a song called ‘Let the Old Ways Die’, so we’re pretty excited.

How do you guys go about writing and composing a song?

It happens in a few different ways. Sometimes one of us will write a complete song and we’ll work it out together arrangement wise. A lot of times I’ll have a bit of guitar music and an idea for a melody that we’ll form a song around. And Christine writes great things on piano, etc. She actually wrote a song on guitar for the first time and it made the new record. It’s called ‘Blue’. She’s a great lyricist so I always love to hear what she might come up with over a piece of music that I give to her.

If you could try anything musically that you aren’t currently doing, what would it be and why?

I think I’ve always wanted to have a 3 piece band, kind of Hendrix style, just to be able to goof off and play a lot of loud guitar. My friend Joel and I are hoping to start recording and playing with a side project that we’ve been wanted to do for a long time called Desk Top Rulers. It’s going to cover that loud guitar music thing so that’ll be fun. We're both really busy so I don't know when it'll happen, but someday!

Jason; Photo courtesy http://www.bossus.comWho are some of your current musical influences?

Well, I always love anything Radiohead is doing. I love Spoon, that guy’s voice is great. Love Wilco. There’s a lot of music, old and new, that I always go back to. My iPod is a big mess of all sorts of stuff. I liked the Gnarls Barkley stuff, I like to go and see my friend’s bands, etc. I like Tom Waits. There is a great singer named Jesca Hoop that I really like to go and see when she’s playing around here.

Do you have any advice for aspiring guitarists/musicians trying to get into the business?

Learn to write songs early! I wish I had started a lot younger with that instead of just practicing lead guitar. And if it’s really what you want to do, don’t give up. Stay with it and work hard and find other people to play with that are willing to work as hard as you. It’s not always that easy, but it’s possible.

Thanks a million Jason!

Thanks to you too, cheers!
