Dreams Become Realities for The Spill Canvas April 13, 2010 Fresh from a long break, The Spill Canvas is getting ready to head on a month-long tour with Reprise label-mate Tyler Hilton, AM Taxi and The New Politics. For drummer Joe Beck and the rest of the band, the best part about getting back on the road is just that: getting back out there. "It’s been a long time since we’ve toured the US so we’re extremely excited to be playing in front of people again and playing shows and also about playing this new music."
The tour follows the band’s latest EP release, Realities, which features five catchy songs including their single “Our Song.” Realities is The Spill Canvas’ third EP release since their 2007 album No Really, I’m Fine. In January, the band released Abnormalities, an awesome 3-track teaser for the music to come. "The music coming out now is a very good hint at what the whole picture is," Joe says, "all of the music is very cohesive and we’re trying to go down different avenues to get the songs written."
The Sioux Falls, South Dakota band is comprised of lead singer and founder Nick Thomas, Joe Beck (drums), Dan Ludeman (guitar) and Landon Heil (bass). After various band member changes, it’s clear that these four are a good mix and have found the right chemistry to be a successful rock band. The path hasn't always been an easy one for the boys, but it has certainly been a fulfilling one Joe says, "It’s eye opening to see yourself following your dream and have it actually within your grasp...We want to continue pursuing this for the rest of our lives."
Now that we got all of that information noted, it’s my turn to schmooze about this band! I’m a sucker for a catchy chorus – in fact, it takes over my life – and I can’t keep my finger from pressing the repeat button every time this band comes on my iPod. Lucky for me (but unlucky for my pointer finger), the Realities EP came out just a few days ago. I was lucky enough to talk about the new EP with The Spill Canvas’ drummer Joe Beck, please check it out and get ready to lose control of your fingers!
Hey Joe! First of all, congratulations on your EP release today!
Thank you very much!
Are you guys getting together to celebrate at all today?
You know what, I’m actually headed to Sioux Falls right now! I was out of town so I’m headed back today and yeah, I’m sure I’ll be getting together with the guys and just enjoying the day. It’s fun to get started again.
What does this EP represent to you?
I really feel like we’ve reached a whole new level song-wise and music-wise. I really feel like we’ve come a long way in these past couple years and we’ve grown up a lot. It’s kind of the story of all of that and it’s a good point to be in. We’re very excited about where the music has evolved. We’re pumped!
After hearing Realities, I can definitely tell that you guys have really grown together as a band. Also, I’ve noticed that your all of your album releases have all been really different. Do you guys purposely try to change your sound with each album or has it been a more natural thing?
I think that our individual music taste evolves all the time. We’re always looking for new music and new bands…kind of feeding off of each other and finding something else to listen to. For each record we’ve pushed ourselves to not listen to the records that we would normally listen to and find something different to push our musical boundaries to a new level. So, I think it happens naturally, but also intentionally a little at the same time.
You guys have always had really unique album covers. Who designed the cover for Realities and what does it mean?
It was done by Warner Brothers and our artwork team has worked really hard to get this package of logos ready to go for this new cycle. We see it as signifying us kind of spreading our wings a little bit and reaching a whole new level of maturity. We feel like it’s a simple yet great message of ‘alright, here we go – let’s do this!” We love the new logo and the EP covers. We’ve just been so pleased with everything.
Well you guys have released two EPs already this year, is there a new album coming by chance?
Yeah, that’s in the works actually! The good news is that we’ve had lots of time to record lots of material in the last year and a half. So we have lots of songs recorded and we’re really excited about releasing them in the manner that we’ve been releasing them. There will be news about more music coming up in upcoming months.
Can you give us any hints about the music on the next record or maybe the title? :)
It’s really similar to this stuff. I think the EPs have helped transition it along the way. The music coming out now is a very good hint at what the whole picture is. All of the music is very cohesive and we’re trying to go down different avenues to get the songs written.
What’s the songwriting process like for you guys?
It varies song to song. We don’t really have a set formula for how it comes out. But you know, they’ll start from anywhere – usually from Nick or one of us having an idea. This is the first time that we actually worked with other musicians to write some music together. It helped us think outside of the box a little bit and maybe put a different spin on things that we wouldn’t have normally thought. It’s been a very fun process for us to learn from other extremely talented musicians.
Were you in any other bands before you joined up with The Spill Canvas?
Just bands in high school and stuff like that. Actually The Spill Canvas full band left for their first tour the day after I graduated high school, so we didn’t have much time to be doing anything else! We all went to the same high school in South Dakota and have grown up together, so that’s just how it turned out.
Who are some artists that have really inspired you over the years?
We listen to tons of different kinds of stuff. Some of our favorites are Fleetwood Mac and Peter Gabriel to Nickel Creek, Justin Timberlake…We’re all huge Jimmy Eat World fans and Saves the Day. I don’t know, I could go on and on but we just listen to so much. We’re always in search of what’s out there.
You’re just about to head out on tour with Tyler Hilton, AM Taxi and The New Politics, what are some things you’re looking forward to on this tour?
First of all, we’re just excited about getting out on the road again. It’s been a long time since we’ve toured the US so we’re extremely excited to be playing in front of people again and playing shows and also about playing this new music. We’re very refreshed after the long break and we’re just excited to be playing shows again.
How do you guys pump yourselves up before shows?
Usually before every show, we just kind of get in a little huddle and say things to loosen each other up…Probably not all things that can be repeated [laughs]. But at the same time we just try to get each other loose and not really think about performing well so to speak, but more just having fun and enjoying what we’re doing. It’s worked thus far, so we’re just trying to keep that up.
Have you had any weird fan experiences?
We feel like we have the best fans in the world! So, I wouldn’t necessarily say any weird fan stuff, but just really nice fan stuff. We have lots of fans that like to make us really cool stuff like they’ll bring photo memory booklets and big boxes of food for us. We really feel like we have the best fans in the world.
What has being in a band and touring taught you about yourself and your band-mates?
Well, I think that being in a band has kind of forced us to grow up a lot quicker than maybe we normally would have if we all would’ve gone to college. I feel like we’ve had to deal with a lot of things in the course of our existence in the last 6 or 7 years that we normally wouldn’t have to deal with on a normal path. It’s eye opening to see yourself following your dream and have it actually within your grasp. It really is the only way to live. It’s extremely fulfilling to be able to do this for so long and continue to do what we love. We want to continue pursuing this for the rest of our lives.
What kinds of things do you like to do in your spare time (when you have it)?
A few of us are really big sports nerds so if we have a day off from the studio or on tour and we’re in a city, we’ll try to go catch a basketball game or a football game. A couple of the other guys are big video gamers so they keep themselves busy with that. On the long drives we watch a lot of movies and a lot of TV series, so just whatever to kill time.
What kinds of things are you into right now?
Hmm. Albums… I just got this new record by Crash Kings. It’s kind of like piano rock - it’s really good. I’ve been enjoying it. I just got a new Stevie Nicks record that I’ve been listening to. I’m a huge Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks fan. And books… I actually just got done re-reading The Great Gatsby – it’s an American classic, so obviously it’s a great book but I wanted to go back and read it again, it was cool. And magazines…I’m a huge golf nerd so I get Golf Digest and I kind of dork out on that [laughs]. I gotta fix that stroke you know?!
Definitely! Well that about wraps it up, thank you so much Joe! I look forward to seeing you in Seattle!
Perfect! Thank you very much, I appreciate it, thanks for your time!
